A recent study published by McMaster University idicates that massage aids muscle healing. "Massage is a safe and viable option to use in a medical practice," commented Dr Mark Tarnopolysky of McMaster University in a recent CBC report. "Massage might enhance some of the favourable benefits we get from exercise."

Researchers at McMaster also discovered that muscle massage blunts pain using the same route as anti-inflammatory pain relivers.

Maurice Lavigne, RMT, R.Ac.,has been practicing massage therapy for over 15 years. He offers a unique approach to treatment by combining Acupressure Massage, MyoFascial Release and Swedish Massage to obtain quick and lasting results. Attention is given to specific problems, rather than a more generalized treatment.

Acupressure uses both fingers and thumbs to press key points on the surface of the skin stimulating the body’s natural self-curative abilities. These points are located on meridians, or energy pathways, the same ones used in acupuncture. When pressed, they release muscular tension, promoting the circulation of blood and vital energy.

Acupressure helps reduce tension and constrictions before they develop into a disease. It can help relieve a number of conditions such as headaches, sinus problems, neck pain, backaches, arthritis, muscle aches, tension due to stress, menstrual cramps, constipation, and indigestion.

MyoFascial Release is the physical manipulation of the body's connective tissue or fascia. This tissue layer connects every muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, and organ in the body. Many of the meridians or energy pathways used in Traditional Chinese Medicine pass through the fascial layer.

During treatment, long, stretching strokes of the hands and forearms are applied to various parts of the body opening fascial restrictions. Patients experience long-term relief of pain and tension due to injury and stress.

This powerful technique is very good at balancing the body's musculo-skeletal system. It is also effective in releasing deep rooted emotional pain and trauma.

Swedish Massage includes a variety of techniques designed to relax the muscles. It involves the use of kneading, stroking, friction, tapping, and vibration and may provide relief from stiffness, numbness, pain, constipation, and other health problems.

The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Other possible benefits include stimulation of circulation and increase in muscle tone.

Remedial exercises are provided which include postural training, strengthening exercises, diaphragmic breathing, range of motion exercises, and visualization exercises to help better manage stress.
