Aikido
Ai-ki-do is a Japanese martial art created in the 1930s by Morihei Ueshiba, considered by many as one of Japan’s greatest martial artists. Ai means harmony, Ki Universal Energy and Do the Way. Therefore, the definition of Aikido is the Way of Harmonizing your personal energy with the Energy of the Universe.
Ueshiba insisted that Aikido is the study of the spirit. He constantly urged his students to "link yourself to the Ki of true emptiness." According to Ueshiba the only way to be invincible is to overcome one's base passions and to achieve complete clarity of mind. Only then one can anticipate any attack and escape unharmed.
On a more basic level, Aikido is an effective form of self-defense that focuses on peaceful resolution of conflict. Students practice self-defense forms on a matted surface. One person plays the role of the attacker, while their partner plays the role of the defender.
Aikido is extremely fun to practice. There is no competition in Aikido. It is purely a self defense art. Students work in cooperation blending with the momentum of the attacks, breaking their partners' balance, and redirecting the attack back towards them. The defensive movement seems effortless and is often compared to a martial dance.
On a purely technical level, Aikido features a series of joint locks, hip throws and free style or breath throws. There are over 3,000 known variations to the dozen or so basic techniques. Aikido also offers specialized weapons training.
Aikido builds caracter and refines the Spirit. It develops a strong center or Hara, excellent balance, powerful extension of Ki, and the ability to blend with aggressive behavior.
