Fundamentals of Posture
All Qi Gong forms begin with good posture. When the body is properly aligned energy can flow more abundantly. The objective of good posture is to allow the bones of the skeleton to stack up one upon the other in perfect balance thus allowing the body to stay upright with little or no effort. The energy thus liberated can be used to promote good health.
The following guidelines may help you gain the sense of good posture in your own body. Remember these are only guidelines. Good posture starts at the feet, the body's foundation.
Relax, letting the weight of the body flow downwards towards the centre of the earth, while maintaining extension upwards through the Crown Point on the top of the head.
To relax in a standing posture:
- Stand in an upright position, feet shoulder width apart, 70% of weight on heels.
- Crown point touches the sky.
- Look far into the distance. Keep eyes soft and open or half closed.
- Gently let the chin move inwards towards the Adams apple.
- Place the tip of the tong on the upper pallet behind the front teeth.
- Arms hang down and slightly away from the sides of the body.
- Tilt hips forward straightening the lower back.
- Gently lift the anal sphincter.
- Bend the knees slightly.
- Feet flat, rooted deep into the earth.
- Put mind in the center of the abdomen
