Visualization
Visualization is the process of forming clear mental images. These images are used to focus and direct energy.
Even though visualization is a straightforward process, results are not always immediate. Visualization can still work for you even if you have a problem actually seeing images with your mind’s eye.
Images get clearer with practice. The first step is to relax. Then you must actualize your visualization. Visualization can be as simple as imagining a calm ocean or stream.
Qi Gong uses a number of visualization techniques to reinforce the movement of Qi through meridians and major energy centers, rid the body of stagnant Qi and bring in Universal Qi.
Both Qi Gong and various martial arts traditions believe that the mind leads Qi. Using the mind to form a clear mental image enables Qi Gong practitioners to direct Qi to various parts of the body, increasing the circulation and exchange of Qi. This leads to greater health and longevity.
A good example of the use of visualization in a Qi Gong exercise is the Five Yin Organ Meditation. Each of the five Yin organs (Heart, Lungs, Spleen-Pancreas, Liver, Kidneys) radiates at a specific energy frequency. This frequency can be stimulated by visualizing the appropriate color for each specific organ.
The practitioner brings his or her mental focus to a specific Yin organ and imagines the appropriate “healthy” color for that organ. The process of centering on a specific organ and its color immediately stimulates the Qi enhancing the vitality of that particular organ.
When creating images, there should be no mental effort. The feeling is like being part of something rather than striving for something.
